Sons of Anarchy
on FX
Episode Summary
WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT
All of the dramas on FX are really a just a play on a common
theme: reprehensible men and the women who love them. On The Shield,
Vic had Danielle (until, in the end, he had no one); on Nip/Tuck
Christian has Liz (and whatever other women he’s sleeping with at any given
moment); on Rescue Me, Tommy has Sheila and/or Janet; and now on Sons
of Anarchy, Clay has Gemma. In the eyes of the male characters, a woman’s
worth is based on how much abuse she can take and still remain loyal. Abused
women feature prominently in the September 15 episode of Sons of Anarchy;
even as Gemma hides the aftermath of her brutal gang rape from her husband Clay
and his fellow members of SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcyle Club Redwood
Original), the biker gang muscles its way into the porn industry. As one might
guess, sex and violence are rampant in this episode, thus earning Sons of
Anarchy (Tuesdays, 10:00 p.m. ET) the title of Worst Cable TV Show of
the Week.
In the previous episode, white supremacists gang-raped Gemma
as a message to Clay to stop SAMCRO’s illegal activities in the town of
Charming. Gemma, however, thwarts their plan by keeping the rape a secret.
Luckily, Gemma’s son Jax is dating a doctor, who surreptitiously treats Gemma’s
injuries.
Meanwhile, the boys are busy strong-arming a porn producer
who is trying to steal talent away from Luanne - the wife one of SAMCRO’s
members, and an ex-porn-star-turned-producer. The Feds have raided Luanne’s
studios, so producer Georgie takes the opportunity to ruin her completely.
Luanne explains to Jax, “Georgie Caruso, s***bag's threatening my girls if they
don't join his company…Georgie’s game is fear, god**** ‘roid crew runs his girls
like pimps running p****.”
Jax and his crew enter Georgie Caruso's office. A poster on
the wall advertises a movie called, "C**dog Millionaire," depicting a man having
rear entry sex with a woman while another woman stands nearby.
“Oh, I love that movie,” Juice says.
Chibs adds, “I laughed, I cried, I came.”
Jax comments, “No s***? Must have been good. Won an Anal
Oscar.”
Jax proceeds to warn Georgie not to poach Luanne’s
actresses. Shortly, afterwards however, one of Luanne’s porn stars is beaten
up, her nose broken. The woman was told to deliver a message: “Tell Luanne that
if the little biker boys show up again, he’s gonna roll the cameras while he
jams his d*** up all you’re asses.”
Jax responds with baseball bat-wielding bikers. They descend
upon Georgie’s studio where a porn scene is about to be shot. SOA gang members
pummel Georgie’s goons with their bats. Jax knocks Georgie to the ground and
taps his bat next to Georgie’s head. He delivers this warning to the producer:
“You so much as send a friendly text to any of Luanne’s girls, your next
movie…Canseco does Georgie. You understand me?”
With Luanne’s studios shuttered, Jax convinces SAMCRO’s
leadership to agree to a partnership with her as smut peddlers. Luanne
reluctantly agrees to the deal, knowing it’s her only option. She muses, “Life
was so much easier when I just sucking d***.”
In all of these shows, women are merely part of the landscape
as sex partners, as business opportunities, as shoulders to cry on, as bearers
of burden. Rarely are they ever their own selves apart from the men they prop
up. So in the eyes of the male viewers watching these shows, what messages does
FX reinforce time and time again?
For once again objectifying women and showcasing violence
against them, Sons of Anarchy has been named the Worst Cable TV
Show of the Week.
