Sons of Anarchy on FX

By Christopher Gildemeister

September 21, 2012

Sons of Anarchy has not changed. Now in its fifth season, the dark drama about a brutal, drug-dealing, murderous biker gang continues to have explicit content which, to be fair, is no worse than what has been seen in the past with this show. Of course, it’s no better, either, as could be seen by a glance at last week’s fall return. For continuing its depressing story glorifying the most savage criminal elements of society, the September 11th season premiere of FX’s Sons of Anarchy (10:00 p.m. ET) is the Worst Cable TV Show of the Week

The episode opens with a scene of the biker club’s “den mother” Gemma graphically engaging in sexual intercourse. As two other naked women lie nearby, Gemma kneels on all fours, as a naked man thrusts into her from behind. The next morning, Gemma awakens and pulls a gun on her host, a “Spic pimp” as Gemma puts it. “Yeah, an’ you’re a drunken cracker MILF,” the nude man replies. “I sucked your d*** too, didn’t I?” Gemma continues. Eventually, the viewer learns that Gemma was so intoxicated on pot and liquor that she has no memory of picking up this total stranger or of having sex with him. In an unlikely happenstance, the two part as friends, as though drunken, drug-fuelled foursomes are a casual, everyday occurrence. (Perhaps they are, among those who frequent biker gangs…or Hollywood parties.)

Meanwhile, other club members have their own problems. Due to the lying machinations of Clay (who, in addition to murdering the club’s founder and marrying Gemma, his widow, also tried to kill his own daughter-in-law and her children), club member Tig killed an innocent woman, the daughter of top crime boss Damon Pope, who also controls the black street gang the “Niners.” As part of his revenge setup, Pope has his henchmen lure club president Jax (Gemma’s son) to a meeting with the “Niners,” only to have the “Niners’” new leader shot in the head – all the while plotting to have Jax arrested. Pope’s revenge on Tig is even more brutal: he has Tig’s daughter kidnapped, placed in a pit and doused with gasoline, whereupon Pope deliberately sets the girl on fire, allowing her to burn to death before her father’s eyes.

There is more, but the twisted plotting is nearly impossible to follow, thus revealing a notable truth: Sons of Anarchy is really nothing more than a glorified soap opera for men – with gory violence, profanity, and rape in place of flowery language and romance.

Media sources touted the “success” of the season premiere, stating that Sons of Anarchy drew 5.37 million viewers and 3.5 million adults 18-49. This begs the question: if 3.5 million of the 5 million viewers were adults 18-49, what were the other 1.5? Were they all over 49? Certainly some were. But how many minors were exposed to this program’s horrific content?

Of course, Sons of Anarchy and shows like it would never be accessible to children, if the entertainment industry believed in giving viewers the choice they deserve – the right to pay for only those channels they actually want to watch. Instead, EVERY cable and satellite TV subscriber is forced to pay for FX’s disgusting content – which then comes into their homes, where their children are exposed to it.

For shoving horrifying content into living rooms and requiring Americans to subsidize it, FX’s Sons of Anarchy is the Worst Cable TV Show of the Week.
