Guest Opinion: Parents can clean up entertainment industry

By Ray Gorham

So, how do we fight back? Our voices need to be heard by the producers of our entertainment, by the advertisers who support it, and by the elected officials who determine what is allowed. But it is easy for them to ignore a single individual.

I've recently joined my voice with the Parents Television Council out of Los Angeles. The PTC is America's largest organization dedicated to a return to decency in the media and to providing information for parents to use in making consumption choices. I am one of over 1.3 million Americans who have decided to unite to let networks, movie companies and advertisers know how we feel.

CHAPTER DIRECTOR BIO:

Entrepreneur Becomes Chapter Director

The Billing Metro chapter is headed by dedicated father of five, Ray Gorham. Gorham received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Brigham Young University and now works as a self-employed general contractor.

Gorham has long been an active volunteer in his community. After volunteering as a church missionary in Japan for two years, Gorham began to spend much of his time volunteering with the youth of his community. He became his Church’s Youth leader and soon after, began coaching Little League soccer, baseball and flag football. Gorham too, volunteered his time as the Little League Treasurer. Moreover, as a business savvy tycoon, Gorham has started, developed, established, and managed several successful local businesses from the ground up.

Gorham feels that television is an exceptionally effective way to reach the masses and to communicate and convey messages to viewers. “Television can be a tremendous source of influence and I would like to see it do more good,” he said.

Gorham and his chapter will increase awareness regarding the impact that sex, violence and profanity in the media has on children and provide parents a source for information on the latest news and research.
