CHAPTER DIRECTOR BIO:
Sharilee Guest is helping the PTC lead the fight against
violence and indecency in both television and video games in
Cache County, Utah. As a mother of four children, Sharilee has
a personal interest in protecting the local airwaves and
ensuring that appropriate programming is available to
families. She believes individuals and families have the right
to retain the 'choice' to view or not be exposed to media they
consider to be offensive or inappropriate. However, Sharilee's
interest is not limited to protecting the youth in her own home
only. She is actively involved in numerous community
organizations geared towards providing opportunities and
leadership to youth and families in Cache Valley, throughout the
state, and across the nation.
In 1998 Sharilee created a National
Education Network aimed at providing families, particularly
parents, an on-line community where they could safely surf the
internet and gather the information that would enhance their
parenting skills and their child's education without the risk of
being bombarded with predatory internet sights. The site
includes a cyberary, study hall, teacher's lounge, parent
education center, pre-school, technology center and links to
over 200,000 school websites nationwide. The site continues to
receive over a half million hits per month.
In addition to her volunteer work
with the PTC Sharilee is actively involved in the local PTA.
She has served as PTSA President for the local middle school for
the past two years where her leadership has led to an award
winning student leadership format where over 60 students are
actively involved in PTSA leadership and events, including
direct interaction with local legislators and media personnel.
Sharilee will serve as the Logan District PTA President during
the 07-08 and 08-09 school years and hopes to expand the vision
of student leadership throughout the district.
She also serves as the Chair of the
Headstart Board of Trustees; Communications Chair of the local
Inter-Agency Council; Chairs the local Logan's Promise and
Logan City Family Week; as a member of several school community
councils, the Cache Literacy Coalition and Cache Citizens
Against Domestive Violence; on the Cache Children's Choir Parent
Board. She is also a founding member of the newly formed
America-Israel Friendship League Utah Chapter where she oversees
the Youth and Student Exchange program. By profession Sharilee
is a Mediator and also serves as Program Coordinator for a
mentoring program, Youth and Families with Promise.
Sharilee believes in today's youth
and is actively involved in advocating for them and assisting
them in reaching their full potential. "Today's youth are
tomorrow's leaders. It is our responsibility and privilege as
adults and citizens to provide them with a safe environment in
which they can explore their world, develop their talents and
leadership ability, and reach their full potential without being
bombarded with media that violates the community standard and
seeks to destroy their futures. We must stand up, speak out and
be heard. We must do our part to retain the opportunity for
media choices and to end the proliferation of profanity, sex and
violence on our airways that assaults us and our children
unbidden, particularly during the family hour." |
