LOS ANGELES – Parents Television Council™ President L. Brent Bozell today blasted MTV and corporate parent Viacom for its plans to air a show in Germany over the Easter weekend that mocks Christianity and Jesus' crucifixion.

According to CNSNews.com, MTV is planning to broadcast a cartoon that mocks the Pope as part of a series titled Popetown.  The BBC in Britain decided against airing the series after protests.  It was aired in New Zealand despite complaints.  MTV ran ads in German magazines that showed Jesus "wearing a crown of thorns but descended from the cross, enjoying a television program," and displayed a tagline of "laughing rather than hanging around."  CNSNews.com also says that the series "portrays the pope as an uncontrollable, infantile character who pogo-sticks around a Vatican populated by corrupt, money-grabbing cardinals," and according to reports implied that a priest had "a predilection…for exotic animals in a way that suggest moral degeneration of an appalling kind."

"This is yet another example of how some in Hollywood are spitting on religious figures and showing their contempt for people of faith.  The cartoons about Mohammed may have been in bad taste but they were political satire.  This is worse.  This is ridicule for the sake of ridicule.  And not coincidentally they're doing this during Easter week, the holiest week in the Christian year," said Bozell.

"When foreigners see shows like this, they are getting the worst of the very worst of American culture.  No wonder so many hold us in contempt.

"Religious persons of all faiths should be aware of MTV's outrageous actions and we hope that Germans speak out about this attack on Christianity."
