PTC Praises Sen. McCain's Cable Choice Bill

LOS ANGELES (June 7, 2006) – The Parents Television Council™ praised U.S. Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) for introducing a bill that would incentivize cable companies to provide a la carte cable choice to families.

"Sen. McCain has shown incredible leadership on the cable choice issue, and we are pleased that he has introduced legislation that will help provide families with the ability to take and pay for only the cable channels they want.  The forced subsidy of graphic and explicit content on basic cable must end," said L. Brent Bozell, president of the PTC™.

"We support any efforts to bring cable choice to consumers, whether it is brought by the industry, Congress or by the FCC.

"The industry's lame offering of ‘family tiers' is not the answer that families need as the tiers do nothing to give families choice and control over the content that comes into their homes.  ‘Family tiers' continue to enable the cable companies to choose the content, not families.  And worse, families must still subsidize channels they do not want.

"Cable choice could indeed save consumers money, as the FCC reported this year, and Sen. McCain and other interested parties can help to ensure that families are finally given cable choice," Bozell concluded.
