PTC Calls on NBC to Explain Decision to Air Bigoted Anti-Christian Madonna Concert

NBC Applies Shocking Double Standard in Treatment of Religious Controversy

LOS ANGELES (September 20, 2006) – In a letter to NBC Universal's Vice Chairman and Executive Officer Bob Wright, Parents Television Council™ President L. Brent Bozell called on the network to explain why it plans to air a Madonna concert that is hostile towards Christianity.  Excerpts from the letter are as follows:

"You are known to be a devout Catholic, so I am writing you today in the sincere hope that you can help me understand why NBC insists upon constantly bashing, demeaning and denigrating Christians and Christianity."

"In 2004, the Parents Television Council released a study analyzing the treatment of religion on television and found that of all the networks, and by an overwhelming margin, NBC's treatment of religion was the worst.  In fact, NBC had 9.5 negative treatments for every positive treatment.

"Recently we heard that NBC is picking up the wonderfully entertaining and completely wholesome Veggie Tales cartoons but is cutting out all references to the Bible and to God.

"Now NBC is planning to air a concert special featuring Madonna on the Cross, wearing a crown of thorns.  This is Madonna doing her utmost to deliberately insult the Christian faith.  Incredibly NBC executive Kevin Reilly has gone on the record to state NBC's position on this bigotry: ‘We viewed it and didn't see it as being inappropriate.'

"What he is saying, loudly and unequivocally, is that NBC's official position is that it is appropriate to insult Christians.

"This attitude toward Christianity is inexcusable.

"It's also a shocking double standard.

"In February of this year, NBC Nightly News chose not to show the cartoons that so offended the Muslim community.  On February 7, Allison Gollust, an NBC spokeswoman, was quoted saying, ‘We felt that in order to convey the essence of the story it was not necessary to show the entire cartoon.'

"Why can't NBC apply this very standard with the Madonna concert?  NBC must surely know that this scene will offend hundreds of millions of Christians across the country.  Why not cut that scene, and air the rest of the concert?

"Please help the millions of Christians across this country understand why NBC is so obviously and overwhelmingly hostile to Christians and to Christianity.

"Please help us understand why NBC is willing to go to court to sue for the right to use the ‘F-word' on television, but finds the invocation of God to be wholly unacceptable.

"Please help us understand why NBC is intent on offending viewers with explicit references to prostitution and masturbation on shows like Las Vegas and graphic rape scenes on Medium and now, deliberately offending hundreds of millions of Christians by featuring this mockery of the crucifixion."
