PTC Applauds NBC's Decision Not to Air Anti-Religious Themes

LOS ANGELES (October 23, 2006) – The Parents Television Council™ commended NBC for deciding to cancel its plans to air a scene from a Madonna concert that is hostile to Christianity.

In a letter to NBC Universal's Vice Chairman and Executive Officer Bob Wright and co-signed by Bill Donohue of the Catholic League, PTC™ President L. Brent Bozell had called on the network to explain why it was intent on offending millions of Christians.  Also in response, PTC members contacted the network and its affiliates to voice their outrage.

"It's preposterous to think that NBC would have aired something so offensive as Madonna on the Cross, wearing a crown of thorns, in order to mock Christians and Christianity.  NBC made the reasonable decision to edit out the scene," said Mr. Bozell.

"In recent times, NBC has been embroiled in controversy over its attacks on Christianity.

"The Parents Television Council released a study in 2004 analyzing the treatment of religion on television and found that of all the networks, and by an overwhelming margin, NBC's treatment of religion was the worst.  In fact, NBC had 9.5 negative treatments for every positive treatment.

"In recent weeks, NBC was exposed and denounced by the Christian community for editing out any references to God in the Scripture-based Veggie Tales animated cartoon.

"We hope that in the future NBC will continue to take responsibility for how it portrays Christianity, just as it has done with other religions in the past.

"PTC members and others who were concerned about this Madonna special should be celebrating this great victory."
