PTC Denounces Comedy Central for Making Obscenity-Filled Celebrity Roast Available Uncensored on Website

LOS ANGELES (August 17, 2007) – The Parents Television Council™ denounced basic cable network Comedy Central for placing the unedited version of its graphic and obscenity-laden “Roast of Flavor Flav” on its web site where children can have easy access.

As with previous roasts, this year’s was overwhelmingly vulgar, filled with obscene language and racist and sexually explicit material. Comedy Central’s “Roast of Flavor Flav” aired on August 13, 2007, at 10 pm ET/PT. The web site tells viewers to “Enjoy the Roast of Flavor Flav in all its uncensored glory.”

“Comedy Central has done an end run on parents by making this uncensored content available on its web site. Some cable industry executives say they are behaving responsibly, but this action proves that their words are meaningless.  It’s an utter disgrace that this network would let children have access to this content. The industry’s own solution – the V-chip - has been obviated by letting this type of content be easily accessible to children,” PTC President Tim Winter said.

“Part of the solution is giving parents a choice about whether or not they want to subsidize this type of content with their cable bills. Comedy Central offers one of the richest arguments for cable choice.  The network has proven time and again and around the clock that if there’s a barrier of taste left, they will smash it to pieces. Cable choice is the one solution that will truly empower the consumer. Those who want to pay for this material could continue to do so; those who are offended by it would not be forced to pay for what Comedy Central thinks is entertainment.

“The other solution is for Comedy Central to ensure that children cannot access this content on its web site. Comedy Central should make web viewers prove their age with an age verification system. They certainly can provide this solution if they want to. We hope that the cable network will reverse its irresponsible course,” Winter concluded.
