PTC Responds to BET President Resignation

LOS ANGELES (September 12, 2008) - The Parents Television Council™ issued a statement in response to the news that BET President Reginald Hudlin has resigned.

Earlier this year, the PTC, in partnership with the Enough is Enough Campaign, issued the results of a study regarding BET and MTV daytime music video programming, and found that as recently as March 2008, children who watched BET’s Rap City and 106 & Park and MTV’s Sucker Free on MTV were bombarded with adult content - sexual, violent, profane or obscene - once every 38 seconds.

“In light of today’s news and the shocking results of our study, BET must seize this opportunity to change its programming direction.  BET is assaulting children with content that is full of sexually charged images, explicit language, and portrayals of violence, drug use, drug sales and other illegal activity.  We call on BET to take responsibility for the negatively influential content on its network that is targeted directly at teenagers and children.  While the nation is in the throes of an election cycle whose overarching theme is ‘change,’ we hope that BET will implement a little change of their own by choosing a successor who will place a high priority on moving towards more appropriate content,” said PTC President Tim Winter.
