PTC Congratulates Genachowski on Nomination for FCC Chair

Calls for Increased Attention to Broadcast Decency, Cable Choice

LOS ANGELES (January 13, 2009) – The Parents Television Council™ urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to focus on the critical issues of broadcast decency and cable choice following President-elect Obama’s nomination of Julius Genachowski to head the FCC.

“We congratulate Mr. Genachowski on his nomination to serve as the next chairman of the FCC. We hope the FCC under his leadership will be committed to putting the public interest ahead of the corporate interest
,” said PTC President Tim Winter.

“Among the numerous issues that fall under FCC oversight, broadcast decency and cable choice are of critical importance to parents and families. We call on the FCC to focus squarely on its legal obligation to uphold broadcast decency standards, despite the fact that the TV networks seem determined to ignore the written law, the intent of Congress, and the will of the American people at every turn.

“We also encourage the new FCC to continue to work toward ensuring consumers’ access to the quality cable programming of their choice and to provide consumers and families the ability to choose and pay for only the TV programming they want coming into their homes.

“We call on the leadership of the Senate Commerce Committee to ensure that Mr. Genachowki is questioned fully about his commitment to enforce federal broadcast decency law and to resolve the tens of thousands of indecency complaints received by the Commission before being confirmed,” Winter concluded.
