LOS ANGELES (April 30, 2009) – The Parents Television Council™ offered congratulations to Mignon L. Clyburn following President Obama’s announcement Wednesday evening that he will nominate her to fill an open Democratic seat at the Federal Communications Commission. PTC also urged Senate Republicans to move swiftly to nominate a pro-family candidate to the Commission.
“We congratulate Ms. Clyburn on this announcement and look forward to working with the new group of leaders at the FCC. Following the U.S. Supreme Court ruling this week that affirmed the FCC’s role in holding broadcasters accountable for the content they air on the public airwaves, PTC urges the FCC to focus on the important issue of broadcast decency and act on the tens of thousands of pending indecency complaints,” said PTC President Tim Winter.
“We also urge Senate Republicans to act quickly to fill the vacant Republican slot at the FCC. It is critically important that families – the true owners of the broadcast airwaves – have a voice on the Commission,” Winter said.
A coalition of 12 groups including the Parents Television Council, Focus on the Family Action and Concerned Women for America voiced their support for Lee Carosi Dunn of Senator John McCain’s office in a letter to Senators Mitch McConnell and Kay Bailey Hutchison.
“We feel that Lee Carosi Dunn is more than qualified to address the current issues confronting the FCC. As a mother of young children, Dunn would also be an important advocate for families who want to block obscene, indecent, or profane programming from entering their homes,” Winter concluded.
