PTC Commends YouTube for Giving Users a Way to Filter Explicit Comments

LOS ANGELES (May 22, 2009) – The Parents Television Council™ commended YouTube for giving users a way to filter explicit comments on its videos, which was a solution recommended by the PTC in its December 2008 YouTube analysis.  (See YouTube’s statement: http://help.youtube.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=147963)

In its YouTube analysis, the PTC found that children who use YouTube to search for video clips of their favorite stars like Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers are exposed to some of the most obscene language available.  The analysis revealed that YouTube’s gating procedures did not extend to text commentary.

“YouTube is to be commended for providing a solution to a substantial problem, which was one of our requests to the company upon finding that YouTube’s gating mechanisms did not shield kids from harmful and offensive profanity in the text commentary.  Parents are grateful for YouTube’s action to protect their children,” said PTC President Tim Winter.

“We hope that YouTube will continue to improve on its site by extending its filtering capability to its advertisements and InVideo links.  We continue to recommend that YouTube adopts a thorough, accurate and transparent rating system for all of its content that would allow parents to block material they deem inappropriate for their children.”
