PTC to Senate: FCC Commissioners Must Take a Stand for Broadcast Decency

LOS ANGELES (June 1, 2009) – The Parents Television Council™ is calling on the U.S. Senate to ensure that all FCC commissioners will take a stand against broadcast indecency.  Julius Genachowski has been nominated for FCC chairman, and Mignon L. Clyburn has been nominated as FCC commissioner.  It has been reported Robert McDowell will be nominated as a returning commissioner, and Meredith Atwell Baker will be nominated as a new commissioner.

“Each FCC commissioner and the chairman must support the Commission’s job to vigorously enforce decency standards of the publicly-owned broadcast airwaves.  The U.S. Senate must ensure that the FCC continues to act in the interest of the American people by holding broadcasters accountable for how they use the free public airwaves to conduct business,” said PTC President Tim Winter.

“Commissioner McDowell has shown little leadership on decency matters and both Ms. Clyburn and Ms. Baker have no track records on these issues.  Though Mr. Genachowski sits on the board of Common Sense Media, we still know very little about his intent to enforce decency standards, though we remain hopeful that he understands the importance of the issue.

“Given the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision supporting the FCC’s policy to fine broadcasters for violating the broadcast indecency law, an FCC that keeps its priority focused on enforcing the law and putting families first is extremely important.  We hope that our members and other concerned Americans will echo these concerns to their Senators during this critical time,” Winter concluded.
