PTC Partners with Lilly and Pfizer to Alert Parents about ED Ads

LOS ANGELES (October 12, 2010) – The Parents Television Council™ formally announced its initiative to alert parents about which broadcast television programs will contain advertisements for erectile dysfunction drugs. PTC receives weekly broadcast schedules from Eli Lilly & Co., makers of Cialis, and Pfizer, the parent company of Viagra. The advertising schedules are made available to the public on PTC’s website at www.parentstv.org/ed.

“We are grateful to Lilly and Pfizer for sharing their broadcast television ad buys with us so we can inform our members and the public about where the ads will air. This is an important first step in addressing the concerns many parents have about advertisements for erectile dysfunction drugs,” said PTC President Tim Winter.

PTC began working with pharmaceutical companies to address parents’ concerns about ED advertisements two years ago when a representative spoke at Lilly’s annual shareholders meeting. PTC then opened discussions with Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline and found that all three pharmaceutical companies were eager to address parents’ concerns by making their media buys public. GlaxoSmithKline later discontinued television advertising.

We applaud all three companies for their willingness to address the concerns raised by parents, grandparents and others who had been caught off guard by ED advertisements. Our goal is not to discourage viewers from watching programs that contain the ads, but simply to inform parents about where they will air and let them decide how to address the issue with their children,” Winter said.

“Because of the cooperation of Lilly and Pfizer in disclosing otherwise confidential media plans, parents can make more informed broadcast TV viewing choices. Each pharmaceutical company is to be commended for their sincere desire to help parents shield their children from ED ads. As part of its ED initiative, PTC will push for an even more effective solution for parents,” Winter concluded.
