American Dad on Fox

To call the plot of the April 29th episode of American Dad blatantly offensive would be an understatement.  Anyone who values the sanctity of marriage, and the act of sexual intercourse as the most intimate and significant act possible between two individuals, would be truly repulsed by this story.  The episode conveyed the message that sex without love and commitment is harmless, and quickly earned our pick for Worst of the Week.

The show opens with Francine showing her husband Stan her “sex garden,” of which she is immensely proud.  The garden features a rosebush for each sexual partner she has had in her life.  Stan is appalled at the promiscuous life his wife led prior to marrying him, and is unable to become intimate with her.  Francine passionately contends that “sex without love is meaningless,” and that Stan shouldn’t care about her past sexual escapades.  To prove to Stan that sex without love is just a physical action with no emotional consequences, Francine urges Stan to have sex with another woman.  Stan refuses, because he wants to honor his marriage vows.  Francine decides to divorce Stan so that he can feel good about sleeping with other women. The program’s unconvincing conclusion attempts to show Francine’s error but fails miserably. The clear not-so-comical message communicated in the episode is that the sex before marriage is meaningless and carries no emotional or physical consequences.

Watching the episode unfold, the viewer gets a glimpse into the “creative” minds of indifferent and disturbed individuals who are under the delusion that such a storyline constitutes “satire.” It is honestly quite frightening and unfortunate that Fox employs writers who can with a clear conscience conceive of producing content so destructive to children and teens.  The content these minds produced is without a doubt the Worst of the Week.
