Hell's Kitchen on Fox

By Josh Shirlen

The Fox reality series Hell’s Kitchen (Mondays, 9 p.m. ET) returned for its third season on June 4th, and lived up to its reputation for glamorizing despicable acts of cruelty and disrespect between competitors.  This behavior, peppered with the incessant bleeping of obscenities, makes Hell’s Kitchen our pick for Worst of the Week.

The premiere introduced us to this season’s culinary artists as they enter Hell’s Kitchen and attempt to prove their worth to the show’s star, Chef Ramsay.  Ramsay is notorious for harsh and unapologetic criticism of his chefs and clearly plays the role of the Devil in Hell’s Kitchen.  What makes this show so bad for family viewing is that it is presented as “reality,” when in reality no one would endure the Nazi-like persecution Chef Ramsey dishes out.  In that sense, this show is unlike all other reality shows, as it tells young viewers that this type of behavior is what one can expect to encounter in life, and that obscene language, backstabbing, and vile personal attacks are acceptable in the workplace.

It is particularly noteworthy that out of the staggering number of bleeped obscenities in this week’s episode, 34 of them were variations of the f-word. Parents should be aware of the program’s early time slot and take extreme care to prevent children from watching. Due to its vulgar language and depictions of blatant disrespect for others, Hell’s Kitchen deserves to be the Worst of the Week.
