Greek on ABC

By Josh Shirlen

ABC’s prime time comedy/drama Greek is one of the least family-friendly shows ever to air. It seems as though Greek’s writers were responding to a challenge to create a show that exaggerates the worst aspects of college life and behavior.  The July 27th episode was jam-packed with promiscuous behavior, casual sex, infidelity, underage drinking, heavy sexual innuendo, and flat-out mockery of religion and morality.

Nearly every minute of the episode contained content that was inappropriate for young adults, as self-destructive behaviors were presented in a light-hearted and even comical manner.  The plot of the episode largely focused on Casey, who has discovered (through a repeatedly-shown video recording) that her boyfriend Evan has had sex with another girl.  Casey is clearly upset by his behavior, but decides to take the advice of a sorority sister who says, “You’ve got to get back to normal. Normal couples do it.”  Casey sets out to seduce her cheating boyfriend into having sex with her again in an attempt to fix their problems.  After several failed attempts, Casey finally vows, “As God as my witness, I will rock Evan’s world tonight!”

In a parallel plot, Casey’s freshman brother Rusty tries to find a date for Friday’s mixer.  He goes to his sister for help.  Casey tells him, “I just want my little brother to have what I have: a relationship that’s deep and meaningful, with lots and lots of hot love-making.”  After a series of comical and unsuccessful interactions with girls, Rusty is told that he is unable to pick up a girl because he is a virgin.  Rusty believes this ridiculous lie and sets out to lose his virginity to a girl who is known for her promiscuous behavior.  Rusty is confronted by Dale, a Christian friend who is portrayed as a weird fanatic.  Dale tells Rusty, “When is the Greek system going to realize that sex before marriage is a like slapping God in the face?”  Not surprisingly, Rusty rejects Dale’s urge to remain sexually pure.

The episode is filled with instances of college students kissing and “hooking up” in random places.  In a party scene everyone is heavily intoxicated, some to the point that they can no longer walk straight or even stand.

This program is unconscionable. As the new school year begins, it will be sadly ironic to watch Greek, then change the channel to a news program featuring the all-too-common story of college students binge drinking.  Given the realities of this all-too-common problem on college campuses, it is highly irresponsible for ABC to glamorize and glorify this destructive behavior.  For this reason Greek is our choice for Worst of the Week.
