Heroes on NBC

By Josh Shirlen

NBC has begun showing reruns of its popular drama Heroes, in anticipation of the show’s second-season premiere later this month.  The August 27th episode, which originally aired on November 27, 2006, featured the same type of graphic violence that is all too common on this 9 p.m. (ET/PT) show.  Violent beatings and bloody deaths made this episode our pick for Worst of the Week.

While Heroes is marketed as a show about super-powered do-gooders and their quest to save the world, it is hard to find that theme in the typical episode.  With most of the stories revolving around the villains and the question of who is actually a good guy or a bad guy, we find ourselves being entertained far more by the destruction and threat posed by the antagonist than the justice and heroism provided by the protagonist.  Graphic violence involving fights, guns, bladed weapons, blood, burns, and death are commonplace on Heroes.  This week’s episode featured Niki attacking her estranged father and beating him into submission.  We also saw Hiro’s love interest killed by Sylar. In typical Sylar fashion, he used a mysterious power in his finger to cut off the top of his victim’s skull.  The young waitress is shown wide-eyed as blood begins to stream down her face from her brow.

Heroes is no innocent story of Clark Kent and Lois Lane. Once again, Heroes has made our list for Worst of the Week -- and once again we strongly encourage parents to be aware of the violent content presented.
