In anticipation of
its new season, NBC’s The Biggest Loser returned September 4th
with a special episode titled Did They Keep the Weight Off? This episode
looked back at some past contestants to see how their lives have changed, and
how they are using what they learned on their successful weight-loss program to
help others in their struggles to lead healthier lives
A sense of family
is critical to being successful not only in trying to lose weight, but in almost
anything one tries to accomplish in life. This idea is one of the cornerstones
of the program, which is why contestants always cite the inspiration they
receive from their children and spouses to be healthy. Erik Chopin, a past
winner of The Biggest Loser, explained that before he lost weight, he sat
on the sidelines and watched his young children growing up rather than being a
part of their lives. Many of the returning contestants echoed his sentiments,
saying they realized that they would not be there to see their children grow up,
as health problems such as diabetes and heart disease loomed on the horizon. The
success these contestants have experienced has helped them grow closer to their
families, and not take their personal well-being for granted.
The importance of
having role models, and of being a role model, is another critical element of
the show. Pete, a returning contestant from Season 2, explained how his wife
committed to losing weight herself while he was on the show. He explained that
her decision to lose weight was a source of inspiration as well as an important
gesture of support that helped him in his efforts. Now, Pete volunteers his time
working with young people to help them learn to develop healthy eating habits
and active lifestyles, so that they are never in the same position of having to
work really hard to lose a lot of weight when their health is at great risk.
The Biggest
Loser is a downright enjoyable program to watch. The first contestant to
return was Marty from Season 3. Marty was excited not only because he is able to
demonstrate that he has kept the weight off, but because he plans to propose to
Amy, another contestant he met and fell in love with on the program. Later, Amy
came to “weigh-in.” As Amy stepped on the scale, instead of her weight being
displayed, the words “Amy I Love You” appeared behind her. Soon Amy was
accepting Marty’s proposal as the audience cheered with delight. Matt and Suzy
from Season 2 also returned in a taped segment. They met and fell in love on the
program, were married, and are now the parents of a baby boy.
The Biggest
Loser has inspired millions of Americans to take responsibility for their
health, while providing fun and inspiring entertainment for adults and older
children. For continuing bring such enjoyable programming to families
everywhere, The Biggest Loser: Did They Keep the Weight Off is our
