American Dad on Fox

Fox’s animated comedy American Dad hit bottom once again this week with a plot that stretched beyond the bounds of satire into truly tasteless territory.  The episode, which aired at 9:30 p.m. ET on December 9th, included highly offensive comments about sexual orientation and perverse sexual innuendo which carried the show from joke after repulsive joke.

The show starts off with Stan ranting to his impressionable son, telling him that it is acceptable to discriminate against gays.  He tells young Steve that “it’s cool to alienate gays,” and that “gays are the new blacks,” as if to suggest that it was once “cool” to alienate African-Americans.  Later in the show, Stan’s utter ignorance finds him unknowingly befriending a group of homosexual Republicans.  When he realizes they are gay he not only changes his ideas about homosexuals, but now desires to be one.  He tells his wife that he plans to have sex with a man to prove to his new friends that he is gay.  Stan approaches an openly gay neighbor and asks him for sex.  When the man is hesitant Stan tells him that he is a “power top,” which means he is willing to be the man with the role of penetrating the other.  This is not a term that children watching TV should be made privy to.  Stan gets in bed with the man and even goes as far as to kiss him, but when he fails to achieve an erection he comes to terms with the fact that he is not gay.  The episode tries to redeem itself in the final scene when Stan speaks to a convention of Republicans about accepting homosexuals and channeling all of the hate towards Democrats.  As the crowd cheers for Stan, Steve runs up and hugs him in what appears to be a true display of father/son appreciation; but hope is quickly lost when Steve asks, “This doesn’t make me gay, does it, Dad?”  Stan replies, “Only if you get a boner, son.”

The needless sexual innuendo and offensive sexual scenarios make this show completely inappropriate for broadcast television and far more suited for extended cable.  For this reason, American Dad is our pick for Worst of the Week.
