Clash of the Choirs
on NBC
By Adam Shuler
As the writer’s strike
continues, television audiences can expect more reality programming on prime
time in the immediate future. The genre has the potential to be vile and
dismaying, but it also has the potential to be inspiring and uplifting. Clash
of the Choirs fits the latter category. Airing nightly at 8:00 p.m. ET (7:00
p.m. CT/MT) on NBC from Monday, December 17 to Thursday, December 20, the
competition featured wonderful singing for worthy causes. It is an excellent
choice for our Best of the Week.
Five musicians (Nick Lachey,
Patti LaBelle, Michael Bolton, Blake Shelton, and Kelly Rowland) assembled
choirs of talented people in their respective hometowns. Each night, the
celebrities would direct their choirs as they sang songs, including “Ain’t No
Mountain High Enough,” “Over the Rainbow” and “Unwritten.” The choirs competed
for a $250,000 prize, to be sent to an active charity in the winning town.
Clash of the Choirs
is a fine example of positive
competition. People come together with almost nothing in common except musical
talent and the desire to sing to the world. These singers don’t seek attention
or fame; they are merely humbled by the opportunity to sing under famous
musicians. The performances were great to watch, and the series was free of
disparaging remarks. For having wonderful melodies, creating a delightful
atmosphere, and providing wholesome family entertainment, Clash of the Choirs
is the Best of the Week.
