How I Met Your Mother on CBS

On December 17^th CBS decided to kick off the 8:00 hour with a rerun of one of its filthiest episodes of How I Met Your Mother.  The episode, entitled “Bachelor Party,” featured heavy sexual innuendo, strippers, and explicit references to pornography and female sex toys.  This low class comedy writing has no place in the family hour and is the clear choice for Worst of the Week.

Two equally inappropriate plots unwind during the episode, the first involving the men who go away for a bachelor party and the second involving a bridal shower the women attend.  Barney plans a bachelor party featuring pornography and strippers while Robin purchases a “battery powered adult recreational penis” for Lily’s shower.  The men are apprehensive about Barney’s plans but Barney persists and a stripper performs for the guys, and consequently for the American viewing audience.  Robin is mortified when she arrives as the shower to find that it is not “that kind” of party.  The older women in attendance shower Lily with heirlooms and sentimental gifts, but when Lily opens Robin’s box, which contains a sex toy, the women unexpectedly approve of the gift and Lily’s mother asks where she can get one. 

It is also noteworthy that Barney nonchalantly discloses that he was once in a ten-way orgy and that nothing is too racy for him.  It is important to step back and realize exactly what CBS is entertaining us with.  CBS seems to find it perfectly acceptable at 8:00 pm to broadcast a character who unashamedly participates in promiscuous group sex.  Throughout the episode we watch him promote sex toys, pornography, casual sex, and strippers.   Is this the kind of person we want our children to admire and look up to?  Most reasonable people would say no, but this is what CBS pours into our homes during the Family Hour when millions of children are watching.  How I Met Your Mother represents some of the worst programming on television and this week’s episode is clearly the Worst of the Week.
