Everybody Hates Chris on CW

By Adam Shuler

With the TV writer’s strike at an end, scripted programming has returned to the prime-time airwaves. And while this means that a lot of programming with objectionable content is coming back, it also means that the cleaner shows are returning as well. One such consistently clean program is the CW’s Everybody Hates Chris, our Best of the Week.

The episode airing on Easter Sunday (March 23rd, 8:00 p.m. ET), was titled “Everybody Hates Easter.” Chris is again trying to impress Tasha, and he sees an opportunity to do so when she fights with her boyfriend and they break up. Tasha then asks Chris to escort her to an Easter pageant, and he happily accepts. Meanwhile, Chris’ mother Rochelle is caught up in her annual quest to find the perfect Easter hat. The wrinkle this year is that Rochelle has to compete with a hat shop owner, who challenges Rochelle’s supremacy at the church’s Easter hat show. Chris’ siblings Tanya and Drew devise a plan to smuggle in extra eggs to an Easter egg hunt to get a head start on winning, and father Julius pretends to have to work an extra shift so that he can stay home during the church’s fashion show and watch football.

Everyone’s schemes go awry when Drew, who had planned to escort his mother at the fashion show, sprains his ankle. Rochelle tries to find someone to take his place, but the task is easier said than done. Eventually, Julius’s cover is blown when Tanya goes back home to find Chris. Julius ends up escorting Rochelle, and Chris arrives in time to see his mother win the hat competition. Despite this happy ending, each of the family members suffers for their fibs. Tanya gets a stomachache from the candy she won, Rochelle takes a call from Julius’s supervisor and learns that Julius didn’t actually work, and Tasha shows a picture of herself and Chris to Rochelle, effectively blowing his cover.

The CW’s Everybody Hates Chris is the best example today of how scripted programming can be entertaining without indulging in negative content or attitudes. We are glad to once again award this series the Best of the Week.
