Kath & Kim on NBC
Most weeks, NBC’s insipid
sitcom Kath & Kim (Thursdays, 8:30 p.m. ET), is guilty only of being
tacky and devoid of humor. In this, the February 26th episode was no
exception; but that night, NBC turned Kath & Kim from a mildly vulgar
waste of time into a genuinely harmful influence on children by negligently
airing it immediately after an endearing and educational kid-friendly special,
Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five.
Young viewers who had just been treated to entertaining and wholesome lessons
about patience, courage, confidence, self-control, and compassion were
blindsided in the next half-hour by a tasteless lingerie fashion show and
sexually suggestive dialogue. For irresponsible programming by NBC, Kath &
Kim has been named the Worst TV Show of the Week.
Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the
Furious Five was
rated TV-PG and aired at the beginning of the Family Hour. That program
masterfully wove five humorous yet poignant parables around five
character-building virtues. It boggles the mind that NBC would then follow this
special with the hapless, dreary, and utterly joyless Kath & Kim. The
February 26th episode was rated TV-14 DS, for sexual situations and
suggestive dialogue. The plot centered on a lingerie party that the clueless,
spoiled Kim wants to throw in order to launch her budding sales business. When
her estranged husband, Craig, refuses to indulge her, they have a fight outside
of Kath’s home:
Craig: “Just admit it Kim, you don't like me. We don't even
Kim: “That's because you're so in love with your stupid dog.
Why don't you just have sex with her?”
The neighbors start to gather and Kath addresses them.
Kath: “Okay, nobody's having sex with a dog here, in case
Kath desperately wants Kim to
find some direction in her life, but doesn’t encourage Kim to work for it.
Instead, Kath forks over the money for the party and throws it on her behalf.
Kim’s role at the party is to model the lingerie. Kath introduces Kim as she
struts into the room: “For those nights when you're in the mood to be trashy and
nasty and filthy dirty, the Pam Anderson. The chicken cutlets are optional.”
Kim digs into her bra top and tosses out the flesh-colored gel padding. Kath
also gets into the act; Kim introduces Kath, who is wearing a skimpy white
mini-skirt, with the words, “And now, the lovely and talented Kath. This is the
Sharon Stone. Would you like to pull up a chair and demonstrate, Sharon?” Kath
repeatedly crosses and spreads her legs while she groans, “Interrogate me,
interrogate me.” Kim models a pink negligee with a bump at her abdomen to make
her look pregnant as Kath explains, “Baby Bumps are all the rage. The filthy
milfy.” Kim lifts her skirt to expose pink panties with “Baby on Board” printed
on the backside.
The party ends abruptly when
Craig arrives and tries to seduce Kim by emulating the style and mannerisms of
Kath’s fiancé, Phil. Craig says to Kim, “I am looking for the foxy lady who
rocks my world. Kimberly Day, why don't you make today, a very happy day, and
accompany me and you to our marital bed, for some lovemaking, sexy time.” Kim
replies, “Ew, are you trying to be like Phil?” In the end, Kath loses the money
she spent for the party and Kim doesn’t learn a single valuable lesson. Perhaps
they both should have tuned into Kung Fu Panda: The Secrets of the Furious
For ruining a perfectly good
start to the Family Hour with a risqué lingerie fashion show, Kath and Kim
has been named Worst TV Show of the Week.
