Grey’s Anatomy on ABC
This week a number season
finales aired, and two landmark series came to a close. After five seasons of
confounding twists and turns, Lost finally reached the end of the road.
And 24 finally ran out the clock after eight seasons of Jack Bauer’s own
brand of enhanced interrogation techniques.
But surprisingly, it was
Grey’s Anatomy – a show more at ease with raciness than brutality – that
deserved the title of Worst TV Show of the Week for its depictions
of extreme violence during the season finale that aired on May 20th.
The episode centered on a
crazed gunman shooting the staff of Seattle Grace Hospital. Distraught over his
wife’s death, Gary Clark seeks revenge against the doctors he is convinced
killer her – specifically, Derek Shepherd, Lexie Grey and Richard Webber.
Clark, however, begins to shoot doctors indiscriminately shortly after entering
the hospital. His first victim is young intern, Reed Adamson, whom he shoots at
point blank range in the middle of her forehead. Dr. Alex Karev enters the room
to see Reed lying on the ground. The gunman shoots Alex in the chest and walks
off. A short time later, Reed’s best friend, Dr. April Kepner, literally
stumbles upon Reed’s murder. April busily scribbles in her notebook while she
walks and trips over Reed’s cadaver. As April lifts herself off the floor, she
realizes she is covered in blood. She looks down at her best-friend’s lifeless
face, a gaping gunshot wound on Reed’s head, surrounded by a pool of blood.
The hospital is in “lock-down”
and the SWAT team arrives to clear the floors. Meanwhile, the staff members
hold tight in various rooms while Clark continues his killing spree. Dr.
Charles Percy unwittingly admits that he is a surgeon and Clark subsequently
shoots him in the stomach. Clark eventually finds Lexie Grey, one of his
intended targets, but the SWAT team shoots Clark before he can finish her off.
Clark, however, does successfully track down Derek. During a tense stand-off,
Clark shoots Derek in the chest.
With various characters
sustaining life-threatening injuries, much of the episode is devoted to giving
them the urgent care that they need to survive. But with the hospital turned
into a war zone, some victims simply run out of time.
In the end, with only one
bullet left, Clark decides to turn the gun on himself rather than kill Dr.
Webber, his last intended target.
Grey’s Anatomy,
by its very nature as a medical-drama, uses life-and-death situations to play
upon the audience’s emotions. Though the show is certainly no stranger to gore,
the blood-soaked carnage of this episode was beyond the pale of everything else
that aired this week.
For extremely violent content,
Grey’s Anatomy has been named Worst TV Show of the Week.
