Christmas in Rockefeller
Center on
NBC
By Ally Matteodo
There is nothing that signifies the beginning of the holiday season more than
the giant tree-lighting in New York City’s Rockefeller Center. NBC’s
Christmas in Rockefeller Center celebrated this event and many others, and
earns the title of Best TV Show of the Week. Airing at 8:00 p.m.
ET on Tuesday, November 30th, the special’s charming hosts Al Roker
and Natalie Morales guided the audience through the event. Mariah Carey started
off the holiday foray with her new single, “Oh Santa!,” followed by Kylie
Minogue with the favorite, “Let it Snow.” Superb vocalists Boyz II Men
performed “This Christmas,” followed by teen Youtube sensation Charice and her
rendition of “Jingle Bell Rock.” Next, the Acton family took the spotlight for
a moment, since they were the ones who donated the beautiful tree for the
lighting. The patriarch of the family thanked firefighters and the first
responders who helped out during 9/11. Singing sensation Susan Boyle performed
“Away in a Manger,” and Sheryl Crow sang a cover of Elvis’ classic, “Blue
Christmas.” Next Katherine Jenkins and Jackie Evancho performed a duet of
“Silent Night,” followed by a guest appearance by Brian Williams and Josh
Groban’s performance of “The Bells of New York City.” To bring it on home, the
Radio City Rockette’s ended with a festive dance number.
This special
triggers wonderful memories of holidays past as the stars perform old caroling
favorites with flavorful new twists. In addition, the tree itself at
Rockefeller Center is a symbol of generosity and sustainability. The
magnificent spruce was donated by the Acton family, and the patriarch of the
family is rewarded for his gift with a gift of his own: an open heart necklace
from Kay Jewelers that he lovingly hands to his wife. This is what Christmas
should be -- a circle of giving that never ends, and the gift one receives
inspires one to give in return. After the holiday season, the tree will be used
for wood to contribute to the stellar organization Habitat for Humanity, to
provide construction material for the houses of those in need. In this way the
true spirit of Christmas will live on forever, providing shelter and comfort to
those who most desperately need it. When the tree is lit at the end of the
program, it is a magical sight that reinvigorates and inspires those who see it
— truly “the most wonderful time of the year.”
