American Dad on Fox

Pot-smoking gags are nothing new to Seth MacFarlane and his vulgar animated shows. In fact, he devoted an entire episode of Family Guy to the topic. Masturbation is another topic MacFarlane regularly enjoys – ahem – touching upon. So it should come as no surprise that one of his shows has managed to combine the two into one doubly crude subplot.

For explicit sexual content and frank depictions of drug use, the December 5th episode of American Dad (Sundays, 9:30 p.m. ET) has been named Worst TV Show of the Week.

With Haley living back at her parents’ home with her pothead husband, Jeff, Francine reminds the young newlyweds that certain house rules will apply. Namely, Jeff can no longer smoke pot. Haley insists that Jeff needs it to control his “compulsive disorder.” Francine sympathizes, “Look, it's not even my rule. It's your dad's. You think I wouldn't like to spark up a doober every now and again?”

Jeff, mustering as much romance as he can, tells Haley, “Weed is the thing I care about the most, but maybe that should be you.” Jeff’s abstinence from weed, however, results in him indulging in something else – himself. Francine and Klaus (the family’s talking goldfish) enter the bathroom and catch Jeff with his pants down as he ogles a pornographic magazine.

Klaus: “What the hell, man?”

Jeff: “I thought everyone was out.”

Klaus: “You have got to lock the freaking door, dude.”

Jeff: “I'm sorry. But when I'm not smoking pot, I suffer from HLS - hyperactive libido syndrome. When it hits, I gotta get busy right away."

Fran: “If you're going to do that in this house, you'll do it where everyone else in this family does it. In Steve's bed.”

(Steve is Francine’s geeky teenaged son).

Jeff’s compulsion doesn’t abate. Francine next finds him masturbating in the pantry, causing her to lament, “Ah, Jeff, c’mon! We keep the food in there.”

She confronts Haley about the problem.

Fran: “Your husband's condition is way out of control. Bottom line, you need to start satisfying him more, sweetie.”

Haley: “But Mom, I satisfy him all the time.”

Fran: “Well, then you gotta do it better. Get creative, Haley. Use your pinky.”

Fran: “I'm using my pinky, Mom.”

Haley: “I don't think you're using your pinky...Get up in there.”

Despite the motherly advice, Francine still catches an eyeful of Jeff when she opens the laundry room cabinet. Fed up, Francine allows Jeff to smoke pot again. They are shown sitting on the couch as hazy smoke lingers in the air. A water bong sits on the coffee table next to a half-eaten pizza. Jeff thanks Francine for letting him use his “medication” again. She tells him that anything is better than the alternative.

Let’s hope this episode isn’t a sign of things to come, with plots being mashed together from the various   off-color topics that are MacFarlane’s stock and trade. Perhaps there is an episode in the works that involves anti-Semitism and bestiality? But in the meantime, the December 5th episode of American Dad has supplied plenty of explicit sexuality and drug use to warrant the title of Worst TV Show of the Week.
