Worst TV Show of the Week

American Dad on Fox

American Dad is the all-purpose utility player of Fox’s Sunday night line-up. Whenever an ill-fated live-action sitcom premieres, American Dad bounces around the schedule to accommodate it -- until the new show inevitably gets cancelled, and American Dad once again fills the gaping hole in the schedule. Unfortunately, it does this with no regard for the Family Hour. American Dad – a show consistently rated TV14-DLSV - now airs at 7:30 p.m./6:30 p.m. (Central), two hours earlier than usual, in order to make room for the new animated show Bob’s Burgers. Undoubtedly, Fox hopes a strong lead-in audience from the 8:00 p.m. episode of The Simpsons will help boost the numbers for Bob’s. However, if Fox really cared about what families watched, they would schedule the much tamer Bob’s Burgers in the earlier slot, and keep the vulgar American Dad for the last hour of broadcasting. That way, not as many youngsters would tune into the kind of raunchy dialogue and over-the-top violence that garnered the January 23rd episode of American Dad the title of Worst TV Show of the Week.

Stan and Fran are bored with each other and befriend a younger couple, Tom and Cam, to add some excitement to their lives. Eager to impress Tom and Cam, Stan and Fran attempt to keep up with their frenetic lives, partly by pretending that they also don’t have any children. As Tom puts it, “You know what's really going to make us feel grown-up is having kids...I tell you, we use double birth control. Condoms and spermicide.” Fran goes so far as to forsake her son when Tom and Cam encounter him on the street. Steve asks Fran for some money, but as soon as Cam and Tom arrive she hits Steve over the head with her purse, claiming that Steve is a street urchin trying to rob her. She kicks him in the gut for good measure while he’s on the ground.

Stan and Fran eventually succumb to the physical strain of Tom and Cam’s outdoorsy lifestyle. During a rigorous free-run, Stan suffers a compound fracture of his leg. His shinbone protrudes from the skin and a dog comes by and gnaws on it.

Rather than attempt to keep up with Tom and Cam, Stan and Fran resolve to slow them down. They break into the couple’s home, punch holes in Tom’s condoms, and replace Cam’s spermicide with marshmallow cream.

Meanwhile, Steve and Roger spend days on hold waiting for a customer service rep to answer their call. Steve eventually tells the customer service woman to go “[bleeped ‘f***’]” herself.

She replies, “Why does everyone keep calling and saying that? Well I'm not one to disappoint my fans. Guess this'll do,”  as she presses the phone's earpiece to her crotch.

It remains to be seen if Bob’s Burgers will find an audience. For now, it is doing better than any live-action sitcom from Fox in recent memory. Hopefully, one day it will become Fox’s new go-to utility show on Sunday night, relegating American Dad to a more appropriate spot – the DVD shelf.

For sexual dialogue and violence, American Dad has been named Worst TV Show of the Week.
