Worst TV Show of the Week
Dancing with the Stars
on ABC
ABC’s Dancing with the Stars (Mondays and Tuesdays, 8:00 p.m. ET) often
pushes the boundaries of good taste. Sometimes the outfits can be rather skimpy;
sometimes the dance moves are more than a bit suggestive; sometimes the
contestants themselves accentuate assets other than their feet. And, yes, there
are plenty of times – the May 16th episode, for example – when one
judge, namely, Bruno Tonioli,
crosses the line. For vulgar, course language during what is supposedly a family
friendly show, Dancing with the Stars has been named Worst TV Show
of the Week.
Bruno’s
persona as the smarmy European letch has cropped up before. He colors his
critiques with lurid comments and sensual, sometimes downright dirty, moves. In
an episode earlier in the season, former Playboy playmate and retired
stripper Kendra Wilkinson gyrated more than she actually danced, while standing
atop the judges table during a red-hot Samba routine. All the while, Bruno waved
a dollar bill wildly and afterwards pronounced: “Ladies and gentlemen,
Dancing with the Stars presents, ‘Revenge of the Stripper, Part 1: The
Attack of the Killer Boobs.’ Let’s do it now, let’s get it over with, Kendra.
C’mon, let’s go for it.” He splayed himself on the judge’s table and beckoned
her to take him.
On the
May 16th episode, Bruno was his typical salacious self. He could
barely stay in his chair after a particularly electric Argentine Tango performed
by Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas, swirling his hips sensuously and leaning over
to fellow judge Len Goodman to caress his arm. As much as the dance, Bruno’s
display whipped the crowd into a frenzy. The audience and judges gave a standing
ovation to the dancers, leading Bruno to swoon: “Every emotion was out there for
the taking. The battle of will between the man and the woman. Who’s going to be
the dominant partner? [Bruno peels off his blazer] Who’s going to relinquish all
resistance? Who’s going to end up on top? Oh, it was like good sex, you never
want it to end.”
But
Bruno quickly lost the crowd’s favor after Ralph Macchio and Karina Smirnoff’s
clunky Salsa number, where Ralph actually donned a rear-enhancing undergarment
and Karina squeezed into a skin-tight leopard-print cat suit. “You definitely
went for a ‘bad-ass’ Salsa,” Bruno quipped, referencing Ralph’s augmented
derriere. “Your legs were a mile apart when you were dancing. You were too rough
with your [bleeped ‘p****’]. You have to take it gent – no, a pussy-cat. What is
she?” Bruno tried to backpedal amid a hails of jeers from the shocked audience.
Carrie Ann suggested, “Get a muzzle for him,” and went on to offer friendlier
critiques.
Later on backstage, according to
reports, Karina called Bruno’s comments “inappropriate
and rude and uncalled for.” “That was just an
unprofessional thing to do,” agreed Macchio.
The
incident prompted many to question whether Bruno had finally gone too far. For a
show that purports itself to be family-friendly, the answer is a resounding yes.
For families scoring at home, Bruno deserved a “0,” and Dancing with the
Stars
can thank him for the title of Worst TV Show of the Week.
