Best TV Show of the Week

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition  on ABC

By catherine nailog

The honor of Best TV Show of the Week goes to ABC’s Extreme Makeover:  Home Edition, which aired on July 24th at 8:00 p.m. ET.  The show featured girl power, particularly one woman’s devotion to Girl Scouts of America.  Ty Pennington and his design team of Paige Hemmis, Michael Moloney and Ed Sanders traveled to Augusta, Georgia to build a dream home for a deserving woman who personified the Girl Scouts’ mission of building girls with confidence, courage and character who make the world a better place.

Earnie Graham is a single mother of two, Tiffany and T.J.  She has dedicated her life to her family and to Girl Scouts.  Her father and brother were working on an addition to her termite-infested, dilapidated home when tragedy struck: her brother died in a motorcycle accident, and a fire destroyed a cabin at Girl Scouts’ Camp Tanglewood.  Earnie decided she would rather have the cabin rebuilt than have her own home fixed.

Ty, his team, community members, and Stephen Beazley of Bill Beazley Homes and his crew built Earnie and her family their new home while the Grahams enjoyed a vacation at Disneyland Resort in California.  The new mortgage-free home included a chic room for Tiffany, a prankster room for T.J., a dining table that doubles as a pool table, and a miniature golf course in the backyard.  Also, the original brick that her brother and father used to build the addition was retained.  As a bonus, Ty rebuilt the burned-out cabin at Camp Tanglewood and named it after Earnie to honor her commitment to Girl Scouts.  Ford gave Earnie a new 2011 Ford Explorer as well as camping gear for Camp Tanglewood.  The Girl Scouts of America honored the Grahams with their very own cookie called Extreme Graham.

What is special about this episode is seeing a woman’s true passion and dedication to inspiring young girls to make the world better.  Earnie would rather donate her time to the girls and Girl Scouts than do anything else for herself.  In a world where young girls are bombarded with messages telling them that looking a certain way or behaving negatively are rewarded, it is refreshing to see a true role model who encourages self-confidence and commitment.  Thanks to Extreme Makeover:  Home Edition, Earnie Graham will continue her wonderful work with Girl Scouts of America.
