Verizon Wireless Shoves Teen Sex "Threesome" at Kids

The CW series Gossip Girl is constantly showing teens drinking, using drugs and having sex...and in the last two weeks, the show featured a storyline in which a teenage college boy has sex with two of his female friends. This "threesome" is shown as glamorous, exciting, and a "rite of passage" that every single college student must experience before leaving school. Gossip Girl is targeted directly at the teenage audience, and was the top-rated show among girls age 12-17.

Gossip Girl was sponsored by cellular phone company Verizon Wireless. But Verizon Wireless doesn't merely show commercials on Gossip Girl...it also offers text message "updates" about the sex-soaked show to Verizon users, as well as sponsoring an Internet video series with showing even more Gossip Girl to teenage phone users.

If you're fed up with a company that uses the money from your phone bill to support TV that shows kids having sex, you can
TAKE ACTION NOW!

Write, phone, text or e-mail Verizon Wireless with your concerns about the shows they sponsor. And to be sure they get the message, print off the following letter and give it personally to the manager of your local Verizon Wireless shop, found in almost every shopping mall.

Dear Verizon Wireless Store Manager,

Your commercial spot appeared in the CW’s Gossip Girl on November 9 and 16. The program presented a teenage college boy having sex with two of his female friends. This “threesome” was shown as glamorous, exciting, and a “rite of passage” that every single college student must experience before leaving school. Gossip Girl is targeted at the teenage audience, and was the top-rated show among girls age 12-17.

Did you or your agency pre-screen this program prior to committing your ad dollars to underwrite this irresponsible portrayal of children? If this is not what the network told your company it was buying, I urge you to demand a full refund, and make clear your displeasure with the CW for showing graphic sex to teens.

All advertisers who sponsored the two-hour program are accountable for its message to young people.

Will you continue to support negative portrayals of our youth, or can concerned parents everywhere count on your corporation to support positive stories of children and teenagers?

Sincerely,
