The
beloved children's book Charlotte's Web comes to the big screen in
this live action movie featuring a star studded cast.
This timeless tale shows the power of
friendship and the importance of the cycle of life. Eight-year-old Fern
Arable (Dakota Fanning) saves a runt pig from slaughter by promising to care
for him. She names him Wilbur (Dominic Scott Kay) and raises him until he is
too big, moving him into Mr. Zuckerman's barn. At the new barn, Wilbur finds
himself an outcast among the other animals until one lonely night, Wilbur is
befriended by a spider named Charlotte (Julia Roberts). The unlikely pair
inspires and teaches the other barn animals the true meaning of family. With
fall coming on, Wilbur and the rest of the farm animals know that he would
soon be served for Holiday dinner. Charlotte works to protect Wilbur by
weaving words into her web; making him into "Some Pig" worth saving.
Charlotte's Web
is a great family film suitable for all ages. It is both funny and
heartfelt. The barn animals provide the comic relief with the sheep always
following the herd, the horses being scared of the spider, and the crows
unable to eat from the fields because of the ever-watchful Scarecrow. Some
parents of young children should be aware that the film deals with the cycle
of life, including death. Young children can find the scene of death uneasy
and sad. Parents will be pleasantly surprised to hear the voices of Oprah
Winfrey, Robert Redford, Cedric the Entertainer, Reba McEntire, and John
Cleese. The film is filled with positive messages that teach children the
power of words and the importance of friendship.
