After 18 years on prime-time television, The
Simpsons makes its debut on the big screen. The Simpsons Movie is
much like the television series with the exception of some improved graphics. The popular Simpsons characters contribute to a satirical plot involving
religion, fatherhood, and the environment. When Homer Simpson mindlessly
pollutes the town’s lake, the federal government quarantines the entire city. Homer is a disappointment to his family and friends and spends the rest of the
movie seeking forgiveness and saving the town from an evil government authority.
The Simpsons Movie follows the TV show’s ongoing themes: fathers are idiots and mothers
keep the family together, but extols the value of loving family relationships to
resolve all problems.
Caution Cones for Parents:
Foul language in the movie consists of words
such as “ass,” “hell,” and “goddamn” from mother Marge. Sexual content was
moderate. In one scene two male police officers kiss as they make their way
into a hotel room and in another Homer nearly kisses his pet pig in a romantic
fashion. Violence in the film was far more frequent than in the television
show, with guns and fighting dominating; but unlike the television show there
was no portrayal of blood. Other noteworthy instances of negative behavior are
Bart’s genitals being shown as he skateboards naked, Homer giving someone the
middle finger, a school bus driver smoking pot through a bong, and Bart becoming
intoxicated to the point of passing out from drinking whiskey. Because of the
animated format, children will undoubtedly be drawn to The Simpsons Movie,
but parents need to be aware that the film contains several scenes that are
likely to be uncomfortable for families and confusing to children.
Because of the language, violence, sexual
content and negative behavior described above, the PTC does not recommend this
movie for viewers under the age of 14.
