A recently-widowed
pediatrician is assigned the task of setting up a clinic in a small town in
order to secure a promotion at his Chicago hospital. He and his young son Nate,
both still dealing with their loss, experience the culture shock involved with
moving from an urban area to a rural town.
Very little
negative content was found in this film. Problematic content includes mild
bullying (a child is shoved and ice cream is knocked out of Nate’s hand);
Nate falling unconscious after
an asthma attack,
and a doctor has to inject him in the chest with a syringe;
and an infant’s death. Some blood is shown during the
childbirth scene, but the actual birth process was not depicted. Foul language
was limited to “crap” and “sucks”.
The movie’s
redeeming moral lessons were about showing compassion and understanding for
others. Both Nate and his father have to cope with a recent death in the family
and living in a new environment, and must step outside their comfort zone to
relate to the strangers they encountered there. The doctor shows empathy,
dependability, and generosity to the patients who visited his clinic (i.e. when
a father cannot pay the bill, the doctor agrees to a payment of cucumbers). The
entire town comes together to look for Nate when he runs off.
Because of its mild
content and portrayal of positive values, the Parents Television Council is
proud to award Country Remedy with the PTC Seal of ApprovalTM.
The PTC recommends this film for children ages 6 and up.
