Prince Caspian,
second of the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis, centers around four
siblings who travel to the fantasy world of Narnia. Peter, Susan, Edmund, and
Lucy Pevensie had been to Narnia in the first installment (The Lion, the
Witch and the Wardrobe) and were crowned kings and queens. In Prince
Caspian they return to Narnia, which has aged hundreds of years since their
last visit. The rightful heir to the throne of Narnia, Prince Caspian, is
threatened by his power-hungry uncle. Caspian gains support from Narnian
creatures such as tree spirits, dwarves and talking animals, who have been
nearly exterminated. Together with Aslan the lion, the four Pevensie siblings
join the Narnians in helping Caspian to battle his evil uncle and regain the
throne.
Potentially
disturbing content in this film is found mainly in its many epic battle scenes.
Death and injury are implied but not depicted, nor are the battle scenes gory or
gratuitous. There is no foul language or sex shown. Susan Pevensie and Prince
Caspian have a flirtation and kiss at the end of the movie, but there is no
further romantic content. The film stresses the themes of redemption,
cooperation, fairness, perseverance, and the importance of doing the right thing
and always having hope. C.S. Lewis, author of the book series upon which the
movie is based, was a prolific author and Christian apologist, and several
references to the importance of faith are woven symbolically throughout the
film.
The PTC recommends
this film for all ages 8 and above. The film merits the Seal of Approval because
of its positive themes and clean content overall.
