Tulipchan: Let’s Be
Friends
is a DVD featuring two animated stories about Tulipchan, a flower-like little
girl, and her friends. The first story, “Tulip, Citrus, and Cherri,” is about
making friends -- “It’s an easy thing to do by just saying hi and being nice,”
learns Tulipchan. The second story is titled, “Sharing and the Sand Castle.” In
it, Tulipchan learns to be polite, saying “May I,” and “please.” In both
stories, Tulip and her parents use both English and Japanese words. In the DVD’s
bonus features, a glossary of the Japanese words and their meaning is given, and
the DVD’s creator shows how to draw Tulip and her friends.
Tulipchan
features only the mildest content. The Tamanegi Brothers slightly bully Tulip
and her friends, calling the other kids “babies” and at one point pushing Tulip
to the ground and destroying her sand castle. They never ask but only take from
Tulip, Cherri and Citrus. They call the other kids a “baby” and destroy their
toys. Though the brothers aren’t the easiest to deal with, the other kids
handle it well by being nothing but nice to them. Tulip’s friend Cherri tries to
pressure Tulip to open a package that doesn’t belong to either one of them, and
later calls Citrus a “doofus” and “clumsy” when he stumbles. All of these are
situations that real-life small children may encounter; Tulipchan shows
how to handle such problems, as well as teaching good manners.
Because of its
sweet, gentle tone and educational value, the Parents Television Council is
proud to award Tulipchan with the PTC Seal of ApprovalTM. This
DVD is appropriate for children over age two.
