Based on a true
story, Letters to God tells the story of Tyler Doherty, a young boy stricken
with cancer, and the lives he touches: his worried mother Maddie, feisty friend
Sam, troubled teen brother Ben, and alcoholic postman Brady McDaniels. Tyler’s
example of courage, perseverance, and – most of all – the letters he writes to
God inspire others and lead them to put their faith in God and turn to Jesus
Christ.
There is no graphic
content in Letters to God. Tyler is briefly shown throwing up several
times due to his chemotherapy. Brady is seen drinking in a bar and his
apartment, and when assigned to a new postal route he declares, “I’m in Hell.”
Both Ben and one of Tyler’s classmates bicker with Tyler, leading Sam to shove
the classmate’s face into his lunch. There is some discussion about the death of
Tyler’s father, Brady’s troubles with drinking, his divorce, and his losing
custody of his son. Near the film’s end, Tyler dies, though the death is not
explicitly shown; Tyler is seen in bed surrounded by family and friends, but the
death itself occurs off-screen, and the film shows the effect that his life has
had on those around him.
Letters to God
is openly Christian in its message and explicit it its advocacy of prayer and
faith in Jesus Christ. Each character struggles with temptation and with
understanding God’s purpose for their lives, and all are shown praying and
discussing the importance of faith in Christ.
The DVD reLease
also contains a commentary track with director David Nixon and writer Patrick
Doughtie, and a short behind-the-scenes featurette.
A powerful,
emotional, and deeply moving film, Letters to God shows how and how the
faith-filled actions of one child can touch so many lives – and make so great a
difference in the world. Because of the film’s tremendously moving and
inspirational character, the Parents Television Council is proud to award
Letters to God with the PTC Seal of ApprovalTM. The PTC
recommends this film for all viewers over age seven.
