Twenty years ago, Sam Flynn’s brilliant software designer and entrepreneur father Kevin announced he was on the verge of a breakthrough that would change the world…then vanished. Today, Sam is a rebellious loner who scorns the corporation his father built. But when Sam receives a message luring him to an abandoned video arcade, he discovers his father’s secret world – a virtual reality realm called the Grid, where computer programs take on human form…and are plotting to conquer OUR world.

There is little content to concern parents in Tron: Legacy. There are a large number of fantasy-style action battles within the Grid, including a gladiator-style contest between Sam and enemy programs, using Frisbee-like throwing discs as weapons. Other battles include punching, kicking, and use of staffs and similar weapons. There are also chases on motorcycles, cars, and airplanes using guns and other weapons. Vehicles explode, and when a program in human form is injured or killed, it shatters and falls apart like glass – no blood or gore is seen. Profanity is limited to a few uses of “damn.”  At the beginning of the movie, rebellious Sam speeds on his (earthly) motorcycle, evades police, and breaks into his father’s company, where he steals a computer program and distributes it illegally on the Internet.

With eye-popping, brilliant visual effects and a powerful, eerie techno-electric musical score, Tron: Legacy is a spectacular accomplishment in special effects and sheer spectacle. While there is no extreme violence, the movie creates a considerable dark mood which may be frightening to younger children. The PTC does not recommend Tron: Legacy for viewers under age 10.
