When Tommy Braxxton’s soldier father dies, his family comes under a financial strain. Tommy’s mother is forced to sell their horses, and must fend of financial – and romantic – advances from slick realtor Dodge Davis. As a scheme to get into his mother’s good graces, Davis gives Tommy a mule. Tommy is bullied by Davis’ son, who challenges him to horseback-riding competitions. Imagine Tommy’s surprise when he discovers that the mule can talk! Will the magical mule help Tommy win the junior riding competition?

There is very little problematic content in the film. The mule, Jackie A, is called a “jackass” at several points, and other characters give mild exclamations like “Oh, God.” Tommy and his older sister playfully call one another names like “dork,” “pinhead,” “booger face” and the like. Neighborhood boys call Tommy a “runt” and laugh at him.  Jackie A’s dialogue includes words like “booty,” and “dang.” The mule can also be heard passing gas on more than one occasion. Tommy is accidentally hit on the head by a board and plays paintball, and his older sister kisses another boy at the end of a date.

There are many good values on display in the movie. Tommy’s family is shown praying both together and individually; Tommy’s mother expresses the view that “if we have faith, everything will turn out all right;” and the importance of duty, family and doing the right thing are emphasized.

For its promotion of family-friendly values and gentle, child-appropriate entertainment, the Parents Television Council is proud to award Tommy and the Cool Mule with the PTC Seal of ApprovalTM. Due to some minor language, this film is not recommended for children under the age of six.
