Based on the book by Detroit journalist Mitch Albom, this
Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation tells the story of Albom’s interactions
with two inspirational, but very different, figures in his life. Though close to
Rabbi Albert Lewis in his youth, in adulthood Mitch has fallen away from his
faith; but Mitch is astonished when the rabbi asks him to write and deliver his
eulogy. Over the course of several years, Mitch visits the aging clergyman,
asking him probing questions…and receiving answers which cause him to return to
Judaism. Looking for a way to put his restored faith into practice and make a
difference, Mitch becomes acquainted with Henry Covington. A former drug dealer,
addict, and armed robber, Henry is now pastor of a church and homeless shelter,
seeking to help others to the redemption he has found. Mitch’s articles
highlighting Henry’s ministry bring aid to his shelter, as Mitch is overwhelmed
with understanding and gratitude for the many blessing he has received.
There is no content to concern parents in this movie. In flashback,
Henry is shown holding up a few individuals, and his drug habit is discussed;
but the majority of his crimes are dealt with by implication and not overtly
shown. When Rabbi Lewis passes away Mitch delivers the eulogy, but the death
itself is not seen.
In the great tradition of the Hallmark Hall of Fame, Have
a Little Faith is a tremendously powerful dramatization showing that people
can change, and highlighting the difference for good that faith can make in
people’s lives. Though it deals with some painful subjects, like Henry’s past
and Rabbi Lewis’ slow physical decline, by showing the difference these men have
made and the change they work in Mitch, the program ultimately is optimistic.
Have a Little Faith
is ideally timed for Thanksgiving – a time when we should all be
grateful for the many blessings we have received. Because of its strong and
inspirational message, the Parents Television Council is proud to award Have
a Little Faith with the PTC Seal of ApprovalTM. The PTC
recommends this movie for families and viewers over age seven.
