Falling in Love with the Girl Next Door

By Samantha J. Turchin

Release Date: February 4, 2006

Starring: Shelley Long, Patty Duke, Bruce Boxleitner, Patrick Duffy
Genre: Family Romance/Comedy/Drama

Recommended Age: 13+

The Hallmark Channel's Falling in Love with the Girl Next Door is a light romantic comedy just in time for Valentine's Day. Set mostly on Catalina Island, the film follows two childhood friends, Marc Lucas and Theresa Connolly, as they fall in love and try to plan their wedding in the midst of their mothers' ongoing feud. Betsy Lucas and Bridget Connolly, who have been rivals for as long as they can remember for reasons they have forgotten, effectively yet unintentionally break up their children's upcoming wedding. While their husbands Frank and James, who are best friends and golfing buddies, willingly do their best to stay out of their wives' meddling, drama still ensues as Marc and Theresa temporarily call off both their wedding and relationship. Eventually, with the help of Frank and James, Betsy and Bridget realize that the triviality of their quarrel has ruined their children's happiness so they must find a way to overlook their problems and bring them back together.

Overall, Falling in Love with the Girl Next Door is appropriate for the entire family. While young children might not appreciate the film, especially considering the fact that the two protagonists are in their late 20s, everyone can enjoy the lighthearted tone of the movie. There is no violence whatsoever; profanity consists of one use of the word "hell" and one mild innuendo (in the context of horseback riding). Marc wholesomely courts Theresa over a six month period and they never engage in any type of sexual activity beyond innocent kisses.  In fact, they never even talk about sex, nor is it implied that they are engaging in any sort of premarital sex. Moreover, the relationship is portrayed as completely moral and honest; they even seek advice from their childhood priest and ask him to preside over their ceremony.

Falling in Love with the Girl Next Door is essentially a movie that everyone will enjoy and can take something away from. Whether audiences appreciate the humor of the wives' petty feud, party planning, and the consequent complications of Marc and Theresa's imminent wedding or the romantic theme of the film, children and adults alike will relish Falling in Love with the Girl Next Door.
