PTC Calls on Yum! Board to Adopt
Family Friendly Advertising Guidelines
The following excerpts are taken from a statement by Tim Winter,
Executive Director of the Parents Television Council, which was
delivered at the annual YUM! Shareholders' meeting held today in
Louisville, KY. YUM! brand includes Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, A&W, KFC
and Long John Silver.
"You may recall that last year, PTC spokeswoman Dr. C. Delores
Tucker addressed you and the shareholders at this very meeting,
calling attention to the fact that YUM! subsidiaries were sponsoring
some of the most sexually explicit and violent programming on
broadcast and cable television.
"You expressed concern and promised to address the issues raised by
PTC. I was heartened by a subsequent phone conversation with Mr.
Jonathan Blum, who assured us that YUM! would implement commonsense
advertising standards and protect the corporation's hard-earned
"family" brand equity.
"Sadly, very little has changed over the past year. I am here today
– again – to call your attention to the fact that YUM! continues to
sponsor programming that contains some of the most appalling
material on television.
"American families – and in particular families with young children
– make YUM! brands the multi-billion dollar corporation that it is
today. Yet your media buyers continue to underwrite content that is
not only offensive to most families, it undermines the very values
that they are trying so hard to instill in their children. How is
one to reconcile this behavior with the positive work being done
elsewhere at YUM!, such as the substantial investment in high-risk
teenagers and other youth projects described on the inside back
cover of this year's Annual Report?
"The PTC's message to YUM! brands is clear: your advertising dollars
reflect your corporate values. I am here today to plead with
you, on behalf of millions of Americans, to stop underwriting sleaze
and adopt responsible advertising guidelines that will keep YUM!
brands off of programming that contains foul language, gratuitous
sex, and graphic violence.
"Will YUM! continue to pay for the "cultural sewage" that is
broadcast into our homes on a nightly basis? The PTC would
like your response to this question by the 1st of June, and we will
communicate your response to our membership base of nearly one
million members. I hope that I will be able to tell them that
YUM! is adopting meaningful advertising guidelines that reflect its
corporate values."
The Parents Television Council™ (www.parentstv.org®) is a non-partisan education organization advocating responsible entertainment. It was founded in 1995 to ensure that children are not constantly assaulted by sex, violence
and profanity on television and in other media. This national
grassroots organization has over one million members across the
United States, and works with television producers, broadcasters,
networks and sponsors in an effort to stem the flow of harmful and
negative messages targeted to children. The PTC also works with
elected and appointed government officials to enforce broadcast
decency standards. Most importantly, the PTC produces critical
research and publications documenting the dramatic increase in sex,
violence and profanity in entertainment. This information is
provided free of charge so parents can make informed viewing choices
for their own families.
