The Parents Television Council™ (www.parentstv.org®) is a non-partisan education organization advocating responsible entertainment. It was founded in 1995 to ensure that children are not constantly assaulted by sex, violence
and profanity on television and in other media. Our national grassroots
organization has more than 1.3 million members across the
United States, and works with television producers,
broadcasters, networks and sponsors in an effort to stem the
flow of harmful and negative messages targeted to children.
We are a
nonpartisan organization that
works with
elected and appointed government officials to enforce broadcast
decency standards. Most importantly, the PTC produces critical
research and publications documenting the dramatic increase in sex,
violence and profanity in entertainment. This information is
provided free of charge so parents can make informed viewing choices
for their own families.
Television is the most powerful medium in the world. It can be a
wonderful way to educate, inspire, and entertain America's children.
Sadly it's doing the opposite and undermining the positive values
parents are trying to instill in their young ones.
The PTC agrees that parents have the greatest responsibility when it
comes to monitoring the viewing habits of their children, but the
PTC challenges actors, writers, producers, musicians, game-makers
and advertisers to get serious about the vital role they play in
shaping America's culture. The gratuitous sex, foul language, and
violence on TV (along with stories and dialogue that create disdain
for authority figures, patriotism, and religion) are having a
negative effect on children. Much of the PTC's success stems from
motivating the public to voice its support of family-friendly
programming to network
executives, advertisers, public policy leaders, and the creative
community in Hollywood. The PTC has employed these efforts to help
save values-driven shows such as ITV's Doc and CBS's Joan
of Arcadia, and to encourage other shows to get rid of
the offensive content, including
Coupling,
Nip/Tuck, and
Skin. The PTC also has a successful campaign to clean up
the Family Hour.
PTC's Celebrity Advisory Board
The PTC has organized a star-studded group of entertainment industry
leaders to serve as members of the organization's
Celebrity Advisory
Board. As representatives of the PTC, these individuals address
issues relating to television entertainment and its impact on
American families, and assist in representing the interests of the
PTC in Hollywood.
Scientifically Monitoring Prime Time Television to Assist Your
Family
The PTC has more than 100,000 hours of entertainment programming in
its custom-designed
Entertainment Tracking System (ETS). The ETS is
the only database of its kind in the world, and the PTC uses it to
produce unique research and publications focusing on a variety
topics relating to the content of prime time television -- including
in-depth analyses of the "family hour" and the television ratings
system. This same database provides the background information
necessary to produce our
Family Guide to Prime Time
Television.
Our Family Guide to Prime Time Television
The Family
Guide to TV
profiles every sitcom and drama on ABC, CBS, Fox,
NBC, CW, ION, MNTV,
and select cable channels and provides information on subject matter
that is inappropriate for children. It is the only comprehensive
study of prime time's content available in America. The Family
Guide to TV
clearly identifies shows that promote family-friendly themes. The
PTC uses an easy "traffic light" rating system (red, yellow, and
green) to signal a show's suitability for children, based on
language, violence and sexual situations, as well as overall
content.
PTC Special Reports
Every year, the PTC also releases its
"Top 10 List" revealing the
least and most family-friendly shows on television.
