The “Family Hour”: the good, the bad and the ugly

Dr. Gyorgy Bela Mohay of Budapest, Hungary

Chapter Director's Letter in the Pioneer Press

Parents teach character as entertainment giants reshape the message. NBC's "Heroes" weaves violence and sexual deviance into an alter ego. "Family Guy" and "American Dad" explode with irreverence through sexual content and cartoon violence. Every 3.5 minutes during the 7 o'clock viewing hour, violent assaults, profanity or sexual content are pushed.

PTC President Tim Winter's says, "We call on our members and all concerned parents to consider whether their dollars will go toward a company that supports wholesome family entertainment or toward a company that helps underwrite sexually graphic and violent programs during prime time.  Sponsors must be held responsible for the programs they support and applauded when they choose wisely.”

CHAPTER DIRECTOR BIO

Dedicated mother and volunteer, Phyllis Plum is the Chapter Director for the Minnesota Chapter, the first in her state. Plum brings many years of valuable writing experience to the diverse family of PTC Chapter Directors and has had articles published in "The Wanderer" as well as in the "Holy Name Parish" and "Nativity of Our Lord Parish" newsletters. She has even authored her own website centered around promoting issues related to her faith at www.parentsincharge.us. Plum serves as the Vice President of Programs for her local Serra Club and volunteers at a local nursing home, as well as the co-founder of Catholic Parents Online.

Phyllis Plum is very excited about adding the PTC to her list of worthy causes stating: "I see the Parents Television Council as an extended arm for parents to lean on, offering responsible reports with no hidden agenda.  I cringe at what the media offers children, the trends in TV programming and music, in cartoons, video games and movies, and the PTC provides information to assist parents in their obligations and rights, making their duties easier.  It is an honor to serve parents through the Parents Television Council Minnesota Chapter."

St. Croix Serra Club - May 17

David Dries, M.D. (Director of Surgical Critical Care and Academic Programs, Regions Hospital in St. Paul) and his wife (President of the St. Croix Serra Club) won the prize at the May 17, 2007 meeting.  Membership welcomed PTC and  efforts to upgrade standards in the media, by approaching local government officials, the Minnesota Legislature, the FCC and sponsors of programs not suited for the TV family hour. Emphasis was on their efforts to do the same.

Parents Television Council Launches Minnesota Chapter

Local activist starts first Minnesota chapter

The Parents Television Council®, the nation's most influential advocacy organization protecting children against sex, violence and profanity in entertainment, announced that Mendota Heights resident Phyllis Plum has been named director of the newly formed Minnesota grassroots chapter.

The Minnesota chapter will educate and mobilize the community to initiate positive change in the quality of entertainment.  It will encourage local television affiliates and advertisers to reduce graphic and gratuitous sex, violence, and profanity in television programming, while promoting programming with positive, socially responsible themes.

Tim Winter, Executive Director of the PTC said, "Volunteers like Phyllis are the key to spreading the PTC's mission in communities across the nation, and we are proud to have her lead the new Minnesota chapter. For years she has had her finger on the pulse of what this community needs and has seen the impact of television on children.  The families of the Minneapolis and St. Paul areas now have another powerful advocate to lead them."
