Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on CBS
By Ally Matteodo
The CBS network celebrated our
nation’s July 4th birthday with the Boston Pops Fireworks
Spectacular, airing at 10:00 p.m. ET. This delightful celebration was easily
the Best of the Week. The festivities were hosted by late-night
comedian and talk-show host Craig Ferguson – appropriately so, as Ferguson
became a U.S. citizen in February. The country music group Rascal Flatts
performed with the Boston Pops at the festivities, playing classic favorites
such as “Life Is a Highway” along with their own original songs, such as
“Everyday.” During the second portion of the program a fireworks display was
set to music by the Boston Pops Orchestra.
Craig Ferguson delighted as
host of this joyous occasion. He is clearly thrilled to be an American citizen,
and showed his enthusiasm throughout the performances. The energy at the
Hatchshell – Boston’s large outdoor complex on the banks of the Charles River --
was incredible. Hordes of people congregated to listen to the music and enjoy
the fireworks. As the camera panned over the crowd, the viewer saw thousands of
shining, illuminated faces. Due to the city’s important role in initiating the
American Revolution, Boston truly takes this holiday seriously. The fireworks
display was awe-inspiring and larger than life. The display of brilliant colors
and patterns paired with powerful, ethereal music could not help but cause one’s
imagination and heart to soar. The 2008 Concert Fireworks Score ranged from the
pulsating, energizing beat of the Dropkick Murphys’ “I’m Shipping Up to Boston”
to the gentle, soothing melody “Rudy” from the movie of the same name. This
experience, even on television, was almost overwhelming; however, the real
wonder lies in the reason for the celebration. The freedom Americans enjoy
should never be taken for granted, and it is only right that CBS and the Boston
Pops appreciated and celebrated it in such a grand manner.
