Family Guy on Fox

When Fox originally aired the Family Guy’s parody episode of Star Wars entitled, “Blue Harvest,” it managed to avoid being named Worst TV Show of the Week only by topping our Misrated column.  The September 21^st rerun at 9:00 p.m. ET, however, did not escape the PTC’s scrutiny and has been named Worst TV Show of the Week for being just as raunchy the second time around. 

The episode begins with the Griffin family sitting around the television set watching golf, which sounds fairly innocuous … until the two commentators start ogling Phil Mickelson’s wife:

Commentator 1: “And Mickelson here, trying to save par...and here's Mickelson's wife. God, is she hot."

Commentator 2: "Look at that rack. There's a downhill lie for you."

Commentator 1: "Oh, they're just begging to be touched. Pleading. How many golf balls do you think she can fit in her mouth?"

Commentator 2: "I'd hit that one in the rough if you know what I mean."

Commentator 1: "Who are you kidding, Greg? You'd (bleeped f***) her for a week and then get tired of her."

Commentator 2: "Yeah, you're right. That's what I do. That's my thing...but hell of a week, though."

Commentator 1: "Hell of a week."

The Griffin’s electricity goes out and Peter begins to retell the Star Wars story in order to pass the time.  As the parody begins, Stormtroopers invade Princess Leia’s ship.  C-3PO (played by Glenn Quagmire) comments to R2-D2 (Cleveland Brown), "Do you hear that? It sounds like we're being boarded from the rear, and not the 'Hey, take a deep breath let's experiment' kind of boarded from the rear."  Cleveland responds, "Could you hold onto this bag?"  He hands Quagmire a baggie filled with marijuana.  Peter’s son, Chris, plays Luke Skywalker in the parody and learns about the Force from Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Herbert, the elderly neighborhood pedophile.  Later, during the famous trash-compactor scene, C-3PO and R2-D2 smoke marijuana and inadvertently push the button that stops the compactor from crushing Leia, Han, Luke, and Chewbacca.  In the showdown between Darth Vader (Stewie) and Obi-Wan (Herbert), Stewie asks, “What part of ‘stay fifty yards away’ don’t you understand?”  Herbert’s lightsaber is limp, an obvious phallic reference.  He swings his flaccid saber at Darth until he sees Chris enter.  Instantly, his saber stiffens.

The PTC’s Misrated column about this episode alerted viewers to the fact that the original broadcast lacked the “S” content descriptor despite the show’s clear sexual content.  The rerun failed to remedy this flaw.  Since this episode of Family Guy is essentially the cartoon version of the film that launched a franchise geared toward children, it is save to assume that more than a few kids would have been tempted to tune in.  Without an accurate rating, parents would not have known exactly how bad the episode is for their children to watch, and the V-Chip would have failed to block the program.

The original broadcast garnered the show its second-highest viewer ratings; and based on the success of subsequent special edition DVD sales, the producers of Family Guy are planning a parody of The Empire Strikes Back.  One can only assume that the next parody will be just as raunchy as this one, if not more so.  Apparently, when Seth McFarlane and his perverted staff talk about the Dark Side, they mean a darker shade of blue.

For strong sexual content without proper warnings, the September 21^st episode of Family Guy has been named Worst TV Show of the Week.
