Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? on Fox

Halloween is a time for kids to have fun, and Fox’s kid-focused programming fit the bill for the 8:00 p.m. ET Family Hour on October 31st. For providing an opportunity for kids and parents to share the pleasure of watching TV together, the network’s fun-filled game show Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? is the Best TV Show of the Week.

The show’s familiar elementary-school questions provided a challenge to contestant Dave Ellis, a bartender and fanatical Celtics basketball fan. Adding a Halloween element to the game, Dave was clad in the famed Celtics green jersey, adorned with a “5th” for the occasion. In addition to the usual class of genuine fifth-graders, Dave was joined by a “visiting class” of Celtics cheerleaders. “Classmates” from both sides, cheerleaders and children, helped Dave correctly answer questions like, “Kathmandu is the capital of what nation?” and “Does pure cork come from the ocean?”  Dave wisely dropped out after winning $100,000, refusing to attempt an answer to the question, “In what decade did Herman Melville write Moby Dick?”

This game show is a delight to watch, and a definite family-friendly bright spot in Fox’s otherwise dark, adult schedule. Host Jeff Foxworthy banters entertainingly with the contestants, the school kids are cute, charming and bright, and the “visiting class” of cheerleaders added an extra element of fun. For providing a show the entire family can enjoy together, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? earns the title of Best TV Show of the Week.

(For the curious: “Nepal,” “no,” (cork comes from trees), and “the 1850s.”)
