Macy’s
Fourth of July Spectacular
on NBC
By Ally Matteodo
In harmony
with the spirit of Independence Day, Macy’s stunning Fourth of July
Spectacular receives the honor of Best TV Show of the Week.
Airing at 9:00 p.m. ET on NBC, this delightful event was hosted by Tiki Barber
and Natalie Morales, who introduced the musical acts during the first half of
the program. First to perform was Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, who crooned
his new single, “Her Diamonds.” The talented Broadway cast of West Side
Story followed Thomas with the rousing song-and-dance number “America.”
Finally, Jewel sang a classy rendition of “America the Beautiful.” The hosts
acknowledged the veterans who have fought for our country, and encouraged
donations to the Wounded Warriors Project, a charity that endeavors to
rehabilitate soldiers and ease their transition back into civilian life. The
fireworks took up the second half of the program, their brilliant bursts
accented by the spirited music of the New York Pops orchestra. The climax at
the end took place to the music of “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Other music
included “Proud Mary,” “Shenandoah,” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
New York City celebrates the Fourth of July with flair and style, as more
than 40,000 shells were shot into the sky from six barges along the Hudson
River. While the musical performances were enjoyable, the true stars of this
show were the fireworks. This year was the 233rd birthday of
America, and the true spirit of this holiday was captured as the camera cut away
from the fireworks to show civilians smiling, laughing and waving flags.
Sometimes the most powerful tools to deliver a message are not words but images,
and the vision of the fireworks decorating the sky to the magical music of the
Pops perfectly encapsulates the elated spirit of America at its best.
