Best TV Show of the Week

Sugarland:  Live on the Inside on ABC

By Ally Matteodo

There’s nothing like a Sugarland concert to kick off August, and the talented country music duo’s live concert (ABC, 8:00 ET, Monday, August 3rd) has been named Best TV Show of the Week.  The concert was aired as a prelude to the August 4th release of their CD/DVD compilation, Live on the Inside.  Though Sugarland is billed as being composed of lead vocalist Jennifer Nettles and background vocalist and acoustic guitarist Kristian Bush, those roles are in fact fairly interchangeable as Jennifer picks up the guitar at times, and Kristian steps in for lead vocals occasionally.  During the one-hour special at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, Sugarland performed some of their biggest hits, including “Settlin’,” “Stay,” “All I Want to Do,” and “Something More,” as well as covers of REM’s “Night Swimming,” and “The One I Love.”  In addition, the duo performed originals “Joey,” “Genevieve,” and “Everyday America.”

A wonderful energy pervaded the arena, as whether slow or fast-moving, Sugarland infused their songs with deep-seated emotion and soul.  Their takes on the lyrical REM songs were haunting and accentuated the beauty of the music with the blending harmony of their voices.  A common thread running through most of Sugarland’s music is the theme of striving to realize your greatest desires and dreams.  This is most fully embodied in the song which ends the show, “Something More.”  Jennifer Nettles wonders passionately in this verse near the end: “Some believe in destiny, and some believe in fate/ I believe that happiness is something we create/ You best believe that I’m not gonna wait/ Cause there’s gotta be something more.”  This song shakes one out of apathy and empowers the individual.  Everyone deserves a life of bliss, and this song assures you that is possible.  If you can motivate yourself to break out of the pattern of everyday life and change things, you can discover unimaginable treasures.  Sugarland knows that’s a tall order, but their lively songs are sure to help encourage anyone looking to break through the mundane and conquer their dreams.
